Vehicle fares cover the driver only. Motorhomes and cars or trucks towing trailers pay by length in 5-foot steps ($10.00 up to 20 ft to $33.50 over 65 ft, lower for senior drivers). Commercial vehicles (trucks and vans over 3/4 ton, tractor trailers, buses, mobile units) pay $10.25 up to 20 ft, rising to $36.00 over 70 ft. Vehicles wider than 8 ft pay 1.5 to 3 times the normal rate. Commuter rates are listed without conditions. The department does not state on which side of the crossing the fare is collected. Bell Island, in Conception Bay, is reached by a provincial car ferry run by the Marine Services branch of Newfoundland and Labrador's Department of Transportation and Infrastructure. Boats leave from the ferry terminal in Portugal Cove, in the town of Portugal Cove-St. Philip's, and the department puts the crossing at 20 minutes over about 5 km.
Which timetable applies depends on which ships are on the run, so the department keeps several PDFs online at once: a Flanders-Legionnaire pairing, two single-vessel Legionnaire versions and the Flanders-Beaumont Hamel version dated 18 July 2025. The notice at the top of the route page names the last one as current, and 511 NL agrees, with the Legionnaire now listed on the Fogo Island run. Under that plan the day starts at 5:00 am from the island on weekdays and ends with the 10:35 pm from Portugal Cove every day; weekends start later and have fewer trips. The schedule marks an 8:00 am maintenance slot at Bell Island for the Beaumont Hamel on Saturdays and for the Flanders on Sundays.
The printed plan does not always hold. On the morning of 29 September 2026, 511 NL listed the Flanders as out of service until further notice with a mechanical issue, and the Beaumont Hamel running a load-and-go shuttle from the island at 6 am instead of fixed times. That is why the times on this page are shown as the planned pattern rather than a live countdown.
Fares are return fares. The rate sheet the department links to is dated 1 September 2016: $4.00 for an adult on foot, $3.25 for seniors 60 and over, students 13 and over and children 5 to 12, free under 5, and $10.00 for a car with its driver. Longer private rigs and commercial vehicles are priced in five-foot steps, and anything wider than 8 feet pays a multiple of the normal rate.
Tuesday is the day for dangerous goods, with Thursday kept as the fallback. The schedule marks two weekday runs for that cargo, the 6:30 am from Portugal Cove and the 11:00 am from the island, without saying what that means for other travellers.
- Arrive at the terminal before the posted departure; vehicle lanes and ticket booths close earlier than the foot-passenger gate.
- Check the operator's current conditions or service notices on the day — wind, ice, vessel refits and dangerous-cargo sailings change the schedule.
